Biography:

Maria Casanova grew up in Spain and obtained her Ph.D. in Economics from University College London. She was an economics professor at UCLA for 7 years before moving to Cal State Fullerton. Dr. Casanova's main area of expertise is labor economics, with a focus on the economics of aging and retirement. She studies the effect of the social security system, private pensions, and health on retirement decisions; the reasons why spouses coordinate their retirement dates; how financial literacy affects how much individuals save for retirement and how they allocate their wealth across different asset classes; and the dynamics of earnings and wages in the years before retirement. Dr. Casanova's research has been supported by the National Institute on Aging, the Social Security Administration and the California Center for Population Research.
