She has a Ph.D. in American studies from Yale University and a B.A. in cultural anthropology with a minor in women's studies from Princeton University. Her research concerns job loss, unemployment, corporate culture, dual-career couples, economic crisis, business histor, and white-collar work. Her Ph.D. dissertation, which was supported by a National Science Foundation Dissertation Grant, was a finalist for the Ralph Henry Gabriel Dissertation Prize for best American Studies dissertation of 2005.
