Biography:

Doina Bein is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at California State University, Fullerton. She earned her Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2006. Upon graduation, she was a visiting scholar at Osaka University, Japan, then a research associate at the University of Texas at Dallas. In 2008, she joined the Applied Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University. Her research spans the areas of energy-efficient wireless networks, graph algorithms, fault tolerance, distributed systems, distributed algorithms and data structures. Her past and current research topics include: data sensor fusion, automatic and dynamic decision-making, data gathering in wireless sensor networks, communication schedule in wireless networks, self-organizing ad hoc networks, wave algorithms and graph embedding schemes. She has introduced new concepts: the concept of k-fold cover set for a network (for which she won the best paper award on software technology track at HICSS 2008 on a single-author paper) and a new model for energy-efficient communication in wireless networks, called the MinMax Energy Model. She has published five book chapters, 20 journal and 50+ conference papers. She was a principal investigator/co-PI for an AFOSR grant (AFOSR: FA9550-12-1-0270, PM: Frederica Darema, $1M) and she was awarded a DURIP instrumentation grant (AFOSR, $85K) to develop a wireless sensor lab at California State University, Fullerton. She mentors several undergraduate and graduate students, including graduate student Shawn Ricardo, who won first place at 30th annual CSU Student Research Competition in 2016.
