Biography:
Scott J. Spitzer is an associate professor of political science at California State University, Fullerton. He earned his Ph.D. in political science at Columbia University in 2000. Prior to joining the CSUF faculty, Spitzer was an assistant professor at Chapman University (2002-2004) and at Seton Hall University (2000-2002). His research addresses the dynamics of racial politics and social welfare policymaking in the United States, with an emphasis on the role of presidential leadership. His research has been published in Presidential Studies Quarterly and The Sixties: A Journal of Politics, History and Culture. He is revising a manuscript for publication: "From Johnson’s War on Poverty to Nixon’s Silent Majority: Welfare, Race, and the Origins of Modern Conservatism."
At CSUF, Spitzer has been an innovator in creating programs for actively engaging students in the study and practice of politics and government. In 2013, his Town Hall Meeting program for Introduction to American Politics students was recognized by the CSU Chancellor’s Office as a promising course redesign, and awarded funding to support that enterprise. In 2014/15, he was appointed as the statewide CSU lead faculty member for political science under the chancellor’s proven course redesign initiative.
In addition, Spitzer is working to create a summer study abroad program in Israel for CSUF students. In pursuing this program, he traveled to Jordan, Israel and Palestinian territories in 2014 with the UCI Olive Tree Initiative community trip.
