Biography:
Nick Henning, a Minnesota native, received his Ph.D. from UCLA in the Division of Urban Schooling. He also received his master’s degree in education from UCLA and a B.A. in history from Pomona College. During his doctoral studies, he worked as a teacher educator, faculty adviser and adjunct faculty member within the teacher education programs of both UCLA and Claremont Graduate University.
A founding board member of the California chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (CA-NAME), he is also chair of its Los Angeles Regional Network and active in the movement for K-12 ethnic studies nationwide.
His present scholarship is focused on the following threads:
• an examination of the political, economic, cultural, linguistic and racial aspects of urban schooling and its significance for the curricula and practices of teacher education programs
• an effort to define effective urban classroom teaching through the lenses of inclusion, student engagement, social justice education, and transformational resistance
• the creation and study of high-quality and sustainable collaborative supports for new urban classroom teachers
• an examination of the conceptual and practical development of teachers after they graduate from teacher education programs, leading to the implementation of a longitudinal study of the effects of preservice teacher education classroom practice.
Prior to his doctoral studies, he served as a high school history teacher, an athletics coach, social services administrator, and a daycare and afterschool program coordinator in both Los Angeles and Minneapolis.
