Biography:
Dr. Fernando Rodríguez-Valls is professor of secondary education at California State University, Fullerton. Prior to this appointment, he was the state administrator for the Migrant Education Program in California.
In the past seven years, Dr. Rodríguez-Valls has created partnerships with school districts, local educational agencies and universities to develop and implement community-based [bi]literacy programs involving parents and their children in dialogic reading practices that explored the linguistic symmetries between languages –Spanish, English, Catalá and Arabic. He also has developed interdisciplinary curriculum supporting language acquisition for English learners with visual arts –e.g., digital collages. One of his programs, Family Biliteracy, is currently being implemented statewide in California and Idaho.
Rodríguez-Valls’ work focuses on equitable instructional practices for second- language learners and migrant students, as well as on the socio-cultural factors affecting their academic achievement, educational continuity and school engagement. His publications examine the idea of culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy implemented by highly qualified bilingual and cultural competent teachers. Further, he has disseminated his research and projects by conducting more than 75 international, national and state presentations.
