Biography:
Hyun Sook Kim holds an M.F.A. on costume design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a M.A. from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a B.A. from Korea University in Seoul. Kim has over 30 years of experience as a designer and educator and has taught at Ball State University, Korea National University of Arts and Chung-Ang University, among others. Kim is an internationally recognized costume designer with rich professional experience in New York, London, Toronto, LA, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing and Seoul. She has designed large-scale productions, including the musical "The Last Empress," which was presented at NYC's Lincoln Center, LA's Kodak Theatre and Shubert Theatre, the Toronto Hummingbird Center and London’s West End. In 2021, the musical celebrates its 25th anniversary of long-running success. The award-winning costume design was presented at Prague Quadrennial and chosen for the cover page of the Encyclopedia of Asian Theatre. Across the nation, she has designed for the New York LORT, Capital Repertory Theatre, AEA company Pan Asian Repertory Theatre in New York City, SF Shakespeare Festival, among others. Kim’s designs have received laudatory reviews from the New York Times and NYC theater critics. Also, her designs have been presented in the prestigious international exhibitions, including the Prague Quadrennial and World Stage Design.
