Biography:

Nicole Seymour is a Southern California native who earned her Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University. After teaching at the University of Louisville and the University of Arkansas, she held a one-year fellowship at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society in Munich, Germany. At Cal State Fullerton, she teaches courses primarily in literature and the environment and queer theory/LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) studies. Her scholarly work seeks to bridge those two areas; for example, her first book, "Strange Natures: Futurity, Empathy, and the Queer Ecological Imagination" (University of Illinois Press), identifies a tradition of environmental thought in contemporary LGBTQ literature. This book won the 2015 Book Award from the major organization in her field, the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment. She has also published extensively on topics ranging from ecocinema to transgender literature. Seymour recently published a new book, "Bad Environmentalism: Irony and Irreverence in the Ecological Age" (University of Minnesota Press, 2018), which seeks to counter the dominant cultural image of environmentalists as preachy, self-righteous gloom-and-doomers. She looks at a set of texts drawn from across Western media that display an alternative set of affects: irreverence, irony, perversity and playfulness. The Chicago Review of Books included "Bad Environmentalism" on its list of the "Best Nature Writing of 2018." Seymour is currently working on a new book project on glitter.
