Risto Marttinen graduated from Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in health science and a minor in kinesiology. After completing his master’s degree, he taught in the Kinesiology Department at CSUF as a lecturer and was the head assistant wrestling coach until 2011, when the wrestling program was discontinued. He then attended Columbia University’s Teachers College and earned a doctorate of education (Ed.D) in curriculum and teaching in physical education. While in New York, he taught physical education in a public elementary school in central Harlem and worked with an after-school program in east Harlem. His research revolves around working with students in after-school physical education programs in urban, underserved areas in New York and Southern California, the integration of academic subjects into physical education classes, as well as research on student attitudes and physical activity levels in physical education.
