Biological Science
Biography:
Dr. Cuajungco is a neuroscientist who came originally from New Zealand. He received his BSc, MSc. and Ph.D. from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Part of his doctoral research on zinc and Alzheimer's disease was undertaken at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also did his first postdoctoral work with Dr. Susan Slaugenhapt, studying a sensory neuropathy known as familial dysautonomia. He then trained with Dr. Stefan Heller at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary for his second postdoctoral work on stem cells and TRP ion channels. His mentor and the whole lab moved to Stanford University, where he finished his work on TRPV4 ion channel.
At CSUF, he is working on the mechanism of brain cell death caused by a mutation in the TRPML1 ion channel, which leads to and is possibly caused by zinc accumulation in cells of Mucolipidosis type IV (MLIV) patients. He is also studying the possibility of using functional complementation as potential therapy for a MLIV.
