Biography:
Betsy Lohrer Hall is a Southern California artist who makes works on paper, installations, performances and ephemeral object works. She has a longstanding interest in process and impermanence; this is expressed in a variety of ways, from delicate, repeated marks of gouache on paper, to her use of simple, fragile materials, such as thread, eggshells or collected, cast-off objects. Some of her works allude to unnoticed aspects of everyday life, or to current environmental or socio-political concerns. Most often, these are approached in an abstract, lyrical way.
Hall earned her M.F.A. in drawing and painting from California State University, Fullerton and her B.A. in studio art from Colorado College. She studied art history, literature, architecture and theater in London and Florence. She studied painting at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, and printmaking at El Camino College in Torrance.
She has exhibited her work in solo and group shows along the West Coast, several other states in the U.S., and in Thailand. She has an upcoming show in Taiwan. In recent years, Hall has been awarded a solo project at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), an artist residency at the Huntington Beach Art Center and a Professional Artist Fellowship grant from the Arts Council of Long Beach. A catalog of her 2011 solo exhibition, "The Spaces in Between," is available through Blurb.com, and a group exhibition, "Southern California Abstraction Now," is available through issuu.com.
Hall is interested in social engagement and the possibilities that open up when unusual art experiences are offered in unexpected places. As a member of the artist group FLOOD, she has been active in the Long Beach, CA community, curating Here and Now, 2016, at the historic Packard building, and playing a curatorial role in the PUMP 2017 multi-sensory art event, www.lbpump.org, at the Packard, the IceHouse and five other venues in Long Beach. She has also helped produce soundpe
